Children who have consumed low-protein milk weigh the same as those who have been breastfed and less than those who drink high-protein milk.
Nutrition before birth and during the first months of a baby's life can affect them throughout their life and increase the likelihood of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease, and may even affect their cognitive functions or behavior. These are the conclusions of the EARNEST project, funded by the European Union and coordinated by Professor Berthold Koletzko of Ludwig Maximilians-Universität (LMU).

The results of the study show that children fed low-protein milk weighed the same as those who had been breastfed and less than those who had been fed high-protein milk. This difference in weight is observed from six months onwards. Koletzko describes the advances made by this study in the following terms: "This research has enormous potential to improve the health and well-being of future generations, reduce healthcare and social care costs, and improve the productivity and wealth of societies," says the EARNEST coordinator.
